Week 7 - Multimedia Assessment

Video Assessment
I chose to assess my students on the video that I created a few weeks ago for this class about two-dimensional shapes. My students will be watching this video as an introduction to our unit on shapes whether that is whole group or in a small group setting. So I thought, that it would also be a great midpoint or post assessment just to see what they have learned throughout the unit. It's also a great way for them to be accountable for the content of the video. :)
I created the assessment using "playposit".

Survey/Pole
I chose to create a survey that actually has nothing to do with my current class. Ha! I just recently finished up my end of the year evaluation meeting with my principal and itt went really well! However, aside from Kindergarten teacher, I do have another role in my building and that is Leader of 'Team Building" so-to-speak. Naturally, this role was a part of the end of the year conversation that I had with my principal. She suggested that I create a survey to gather data about the current staff feelings regarding the team building within our building. So I decided, to kill two birds with one stone, and experiment with SurveyMonkey  for this class AND get the survey done and sent out to my coworkers. I have definitely had experience filling out surveys from SurveyMonkey and that is why I chose to use it to create a survey as well. I already have an active user account and although, this was my first created survey, I was still familiar with the resource, which made it very easy for me to use.

Project Based Learning Rubric

Classroom
For this assignment students will create an informational text, using an online resource called writereader.com. Students will be asked to create an alphabet book in order to teach our Young 5s Kindergarten class beginning letter sounds. This will be a great way for me to assess their knowledge of not only the letters of the alphabet, but their sounds and their knowledge of the beginning sounds in words. Their finished products will be shared with the Young 5s Kindergarten class and of course kept in our online library on writereader.com.

Students will demonstrate their knowledge of letters and their sounds by creating an online alphabet book.

This is an assignment that would be best if completed mid way through the school year. This will give me more time to get them familiar with the multimedia resource, familiar with computers in general, more exposure to letters and their sounds, a stronger handle on the beginning sounds of words and of course allow for the expectations of the rubric to be more realistic.
The issues that I see with this assignment, would be the technology and it requiring a lot of facilitation. This is definitely a project that I am going to take on in my class next year and I can't wait to learn about and get creative with the possibilities that writereader.com has to offer.

Application
I feel that this project will give my students multiple opportunities to create a multimedia resource that follows along with many of the principles of multimedia. For example, the Multimedia principle in which people learn better from words and pictures than from words alone. As well as the Segmenting principle that states that people learning better when material is presenting in user-paced segments. The Personalization and Voice principles will be difficult to align with this project simple because my students will not be using their voices for this particular project.

Reflection
I am always finding it difficult to think outside of the box and get creative with the use of multimedia resources in Kindergarten. It just seems to always need to take a lot of facilitation on behalf of the teacher at this grade level. However, I really am excited to dive into this project with the use of writereader. It just seems like a super fun, engaging, interactive, hands on way for students to use a multimedia resource. Now, of course, it is going to require me to play around and become a master at the use of it, but it definitely makes me excited about writing in my classroom.

  1. Melissa,

I am assuming you are an elementary educator so, with your video that you used and created, it will be very easy for students to follow along. They will also be entertained by it as well because it involves animation. The questions that go along with it are very simple and make them grasp the key concept you want them to know. As far as the rubric, very informative and at the same time simple and easy to comprehend for younger students as they begin what in all likelihood their first projects as students. Great job!

Week 5 - Augmented Learning

Do the math.  Scan the code and check your work.  Your results!                                            Addition and Subtraction Fun   Classroom The augmented learning experience that I have created for my students will be done in small groups during math stations or center time. The use of QR codes will allow for students to accomplish the tasks provided in an independent way. I chose a QR activity instead of an augmented reality experience because I felt that QR's would be more user friendly for my target audience (Kindergarten).  My students will be able to see how to videos to reinforce what we have learned in math as far as addition and subtraction is concerned. They will also be able to access some online math adding and subtracting games to exercise their skills. The best activity is the actual need for application of kno...

Week 3 - Meme

My students took the NWEA test this week and I had one student almost in tears over the types of questions she was getting. Now that it's all over and she absolutely crushed the test, we can make light of the situation. Poor girl though! I have already shared this with my cooworkers who experience this with their students at any grade level. We all sympathize with our students who basically see questions that seem to them like foreign languages and that's a sign that they are doing well on the test. 😒
