Classroom
This video would be used at the beginning of the school year when the time is appropriate to introduce basic 2D shapes. This would be a great introduction video (and maybe even better if it was fine tuned 😊) I would use this video during whole group discussion or perhaps during small group time at centers. Students would watch this video and then with a clipboard and writing materials they would walk around the room and gather a list of two dimensional shapes they find. Another idea would be to have them just keep track of the number of times they find each shape using a chart of some sort. This would incorporate other math skills like graphing or tallying to collect data. Students could always refer back to the video via their iPad at their table if they forget a shape.
Students will identify and chart basic 2 dimensional shapes around the classroom.
Creativity
This is a tough one as far as Kindergarten goes (multimedia resources, particularly creating a video) it's difficult to thing outside of the box with this one. I think facilitating the documentation of their creativity involving 2D shapes would be much more realistic. I could have the students (using any materials around the room) create 2D shapes. Once they have demonstrated their shapes I could video them and have them explain what shapes they created and how they know that they are that particular shape, i.e. it is a square because it has four equal sides, or it is a triangle because it has three sides and three corners, etc. The videos could be compiled and used to create an educational resource video.
Application
My lesson idea and video align with the Spatial Contiguity Principle in that the corresponding words and pictures are presented near each other. The Temporal Contiguity Principle because the corresponding words and pictures are presented simultaneously. The Multimedia Principle because the video includes words and pictures rather than just words alone. The Personalization Principle because the words are conversational style. And finally, the Voice Principle because a friendly human voice was used as opposed to a machine voice.
I intentionally used the Spatial Contiguity Principle and the Voice Principle when designing my lesson idea.
Reflection
I actually made a video!! This was a first for me and although, it's not perfect or high quality (yet), I think with a little fine tuning it could be OK. It was fun to get creative with it. If I had more time to play and learn more about the program I used, I think any future videos would be fun to create. I did discover that created a video is a bit tedious in that it took a lot of time just to iron out the littlest details.
The Modality Principle which states that people learn better from graphics and narration than from animation and on-screen text was contradicted in the creation of this assignment.
I really did enjoy creating this video. I do, however, wish that I had more time to play with the features of the resource (animaker.com). I will be committing to doing so this summer because this is definitely a resource I want to use in my classroom.
I loved your video! This would be a great introduction video for students who are just learning about the shapes. I really like your idea of having students walk around the classroom and writing down different 2D shapes they find. That's a great way for students to apply the information into the real world.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job! I teach 5th grade and one part of our geometry unit deals with quadrilaterals. The set-up of your video made me think I could do something like that with the quadrilaterals for my 5th graders. I like how you encouraged them to look around themselves to find something after the video.
ReplyDeleteYour video was so cute! I like that your video was more conversational than formal. I also really liked how you related the shapes to each other but made a point to show that they are still different! I think this video will be very useful in your classroom. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great visual for Kindergartners! (I agree, also cute :)) You were very well spoken and clear in your examples. It was also conversational and not too elaborate for their short attention span. It makes me think about how I could use something similar with my groups of kinders.
ReplyDeleteanimaker is one that I had not seen yet - so thank you very much for that! :)
